同軸 케이블 / coaxial cable

개요

구리선을 축으로 하여 절연체가 둘러싸고, 그것을 도체망으로 만든 차폐층(접지를 겸한다)이 둘러싸고 있는 케이블. 재질 때문에 한자로 구리 銅 자를 쓰고 있다고 생각하겠지만, 같은 축(coaxial)을 의미하는 同(한 가지 동)자를 쓴다.

주로 안테나 연결을 위해 쓰이며 TV 안테나를 대체하는 유선방송에도 동축 케이블이 쓰이고 있다. 또한 데이터 전송용으로도 손색이 없는 데, 차폐가 훌륭하여 신호 손실이 거의 없기 때문에 양방향 수 Gbps는 가볍게 뽑아낼 수 있다. 광 케이블이 등장하기 전까지는 해저 케이블을 포함한 주요 백본망이 동축 케이블로 구성되었다. 다만 WAN 말단에 쓰이는 동축 케이블망(케이블 인터넷)은 TV가 쓰고 남은 대역을 쓰기 때문에 사용자들이 품질에 대한 불만이 많다.비 오면 인터넷이 안 된다던가

여담으로 대한민국의 주요 동축 케이블망 사업자는 LG U+다. 3사 퓨전 이전의 LG 파워콤이 한전 자회사 시절에 전국 곳곳에 동축 케이블망을 깔아둔 전봇대의 강자라서 가능한 일. 최대의 고객은 SK 브로드밴드
