염기 서열은 DNA 상의 염기들의 나열을 말한다. DNA의 트리플렛 코드가 mRNA의 코돈으로 전사되어 단백질 서열로 해독 후 리보솜에서 아미노산을 합성, 단백질을 만든다. 이때 관여하는 다른 RNA가 tRNA인데, 번역 시에 tRNA의 안티코돈이 코돈과 상보적으로 결합하여 인식한다. 다른 한 쪽 끝에 아미노산이 결합할 수 있어 아미노산을 운반한다.
