소프트웨어 라이선스 중 하나. BSD 라이선스에 기반한 라이선스이다. 매사추세츠 공과대학교에서 개발한 라이선스로, Expat 허가서와 X11 허가서로 구분된다. 2010년대 GPL, LGPL 등의 카피레프트 라이선스의 엄격함을 꺼리는 사용자층을 대상으로 널리 쓰이는 라이선스이다.

Expat 허가서의 전문. 이게 다다. 소프트웨어의 복제권, 2차적저작물작성권, 배포권 등을 모두 허용하고 있으며, 동일한 라이선스로의 배포를 강제하지 않으므로 MIT 허가서로 공개된 소스를 이용할 경우 독점 소프트웨어의 개발도 마음대로 할 수 있다. 물론 돈 받고 파는것도 맘대로 가능하다. 마지막 줄은 소프트웨어를 이용함으로써 발생할 수 있는 어떠한 손해도 보증하지 않는다는 말이다.
