그 유명한 미국의 국가. 가사는 아마추어 시인이었던 프랜시스 스캇 키 (Francis Scott Key)가 1814년 쓴 "포트 맥헨리의 방어" (Defence of Fort M'Henry)라는 시에서 따오고, 곡은 영국의 남성 사교 클럽이던 아나크레온틱 소사이어티 (Anacreontic Society)에서 불리던 곡 (존 스타포드 스미스; John Stafford Smith 작곡)을 따온 것이다.
가사 자체가 의미하는 것은 1812년 볼티모어에서 있었던 영국 해군과의 전쟁 중 포트 맥헨리로의 폭격전을 비유하면서 쓴 것이다. 시 자체는 4절까지 있으나, 일반적으로 국가로 불리는 것은 1절까지만이다.
곡 자체가 사교 클럽에서 쓰이던 것이다보니 멜로디가 꽤 어려운 편인데, 여기에 가사 자체도 복잡하고 멜로디에 빠듯하게 맞추다보니 많은 미국인들이 부르는데 어려움을 겪는 편이다. 이 때문에 꽤 많은 사람들이 America the Beautiful 등을 국가로 삼자고 제안하기도.

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

2 ~ 4절은 많이 불리지 않으니, 1절의 해석만을 싣는다.
오, 그대는 보이는가, 이른 새벽 여명 사이로
어제 황혼의 미광 속에서 우리가 그토록 자랑스럽게 환호했던,
넓직한 띠와 빛나는 별들이 새겨진 저 깃발이, 치열한 전투 중에서도
우리가 사수한 성벽 위에서 당당히 나부끼고 있는 것이.
포탄의 붉은 섬광과 창공에서 작렬하는 폭탄이
밤새 우리의 깃발이 휘날린 증거라.
오, 성조기는 지금도 휘날리고 있는가
자유의 땅과 용자들의 고향에서!
