개요

영어권에서는 줄여서 그냥 People sing, 한국어에서는 민중의 노래라고 칭하기도 한다.

뮤지컬 레 미제라블에 나오는 합창곡으로 어찌보면 레 미제라블의 주제를 관통하는 노래라고도 할 수 있다. 뮤지컬이나 영화에서는 아베쎄의 벗들이 시민들을 선동(...)하는 장면에서 등장하며, 이후 마지막에 장발장의 죽음 이후 가사를 바꿔서 다시 등장하는 곡이다. 참고로 한국어 번역은 민중의 노래인데 운동권에서 부르는 민중가요인 민중의 노래와는 당연히 다른 곡이다.

기타 이야깃거리

일단 이 이 노래 자체가 정권에 저항하는 의미로 많이 불리다 보니 권위주의적인 정권이나 독재정권의 경우 이 노래를 두드러기가 날 정도로 싫어하는 경우가 많다. 반대로 생각하면 반독재 시위 현장에서 전세계적으로 시위대가 그만큼 많이 불러제꼈다는 이야기. 특히나 중국의 경우 이 노래에 대한 반응은 말 그대로 두드러기를 넘어 그라목손을 뿌려대는 수준.

• 홍콩의 우산혁명 당시 시위대가 이 곡을 불렀었다. 그런데 어떤 이유에선지 위 동영상 이외에는 상당수 영상들이 유튜브에서 삭제당했다. 홍콩인지라 당연히 광둥어 버전이다.

• 2013년 중앙대학교의 구조조정에 반대하는 학생들이 이 노래를 불렀었다.

• 2016년 박근혜-최순실 게이트와 관련하여 동아방송예술대학교 학생들이 시국선언을 할 때 이 노래를 불렀다.
