미국인 블로거이자 친근한 인공지능(Friendly AI)의 지지자인 엘리저 유드코스키(Eliezer Shlomo Yudkowsky, 1979년 9월 11일~)가 지었다. 여러 개의 팬 픽션을 썼지만 그 중 가장 유명한 건 역시 이 작품. 뉴요커 지의 묘사에 따르면, "해리 포터의 마법을 과학적 방법으로 설명하려는 시도로 재구성하는 원작."
