실수를 항으로 가지는 수열 [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{x_n\right\}_{n=1}^{\infty} }[/math]을 생각하자.[2] 만약 [math]\displaystyle{ \forall n\in\mathbb{N},\,x_n\leq M_1 }[/math]을 만족하는 실수 [math]\displaystyle{ M_1 }[/math]이 존재한다면 우리는 이 수열을 위로 유계(bounded above)라고 부르며, [math]\displaystyle{ M_1 }[/math]을 상계(upper bound)라 부른다. 반대로, [math]\displaystyle{ \forall n\in\mathbb{N},\,x_n\geq M_2 }[/math]을 만족하는 실수 [math]\displaystyle{ M_2 }[/math]이 존재한다면 이 수열은 아래로 유계(bounded below)이라 부르며, [math]\displaystyle{ M_2 }[/math]를 하계(lower bound)라 부른다. 만약 수열이 위로 유계이며 동시에 아래로 유계라면 그냥 유계라 부르고, 수식으로는 [math]\displaystyle{ \forall n\in\mathbb{N},\,\exists M\in\mathbb{R},\,\left|x_n\right|\leq M }[/math]으로 표현할 수 있다.
- 조화수열 [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{\frac{1}{n}\right\} }[/math]은 유계이다.
- [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{\left(-1\right)^nn\right\} }[/math]는 위로 유계도 아래로 유계도 아니다.
어떤 수열 [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{x_n\right\}_{n=1}^{\infty} }[/math]이 위로 유계라고 하자.
[math]\displaystyle{ \left\{x_n\right\} }[/math]를 실수를 원소로 가지는 무한 수열, [math]\displaystyle{ C }[/math]를 cluster point의 집합이라 가정하자.
- 수열 [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{x_n\right\} }[/math]이 위로 유계라면 [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{-x_n\right\} }[/math]은 아래로 유계이고, [math]\displaystyle{ \liminf\left(-x_n\right)=-\limsup x_n }[/math]이 성립한다. 반대로, [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{x_n\right\} }[/math]이 아래로 유계라면 [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{-x_n\right\} }[/math]은 위로 유계이고, [math]\displaystyle{ \limsup\left(-x_n\right)=-\liminf x_n }[/math]이 성립한다.
만약 [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,x\leq M_1 }[/math]을 만족하는 실수[math]\displaystyle{ M_1 }[/math]이 존재한다면, 집합 [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math]는 위로 유계(bounded above)라고 하고, [math]\displaystyle{ M_1 }[/math]을 상계(upper bound)라 부른다. 반대로, [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,x\geq M_2 }[/math]를 만족하는 실수 [math]\displaystyle{ M_2 }[/math]가 존재한다면 집합 [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math]는 아래로 유계(bounded below)라고 하고, [math]\displaystyle{ M_2 }[/math]를 하계(lower bound)라 부른다. 즉, 적당한 [math]\displaystyle{ M_1,\,M_2 }[/math]에 대해 [math]\displaystyle{ M_2\leq x\leq M_1\,\forall x\in X }[/math]. 다르게 표현하면 적당한 [math]\displaystyle{ M }[/math]에 대해 [math]\displaystyle{ \left|x\right|\leq M,\,\forall x\in X }[/math]로 표현할 수도 있다.
- 구간 [math]\displaystyle{ \left(0,1\right) }[/math]를 생각하자.
- [math]\displaystyle{ \left(-\infty,\infty\right) }[/math]는 위로 유계도, 아래로 유계도 아니다.
- 상한: [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,x\leq\sup X,\,\forall l\in L,\,\sup X\leq l }[/math]
- 하한: [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,x\geq\inf X,\,\forall g\in G,\,\inf X\geq g }[/math]
그럼 [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,x\leq M }[/math]이 성립한다. 이제 [math]\displaystyle{ \sup S=s\lt M }[/math]이라 가정하자. 그럼 [math]\displaystyle{ M\in X }[/math]이고, [math]\displaystyle{ s }[/math]는 상한이므로 [math]\displaystyle{ s\geq M }[/math]이 성립하고, 이는 모순이다.
- [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math]가 위로 유계라면, [math]\displaystyle{ -X }[/math]는 아래로 유계이고, 더욱이 [math]\displaystyle{ \inf\left(-X\right)=-\sup X }[/math]이 성립한다. 반대로 [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math]가 아래로 유계라면 [math]\displaystyle{ -X }[/math]는 위로 유계이고 [math]\displaystyle{ \sup\left(-X\right)=-\inf X }[/math]가 성립한다.
- [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math]가 위로 유계라 하고, [math]\displaystyle{ s=\sup X }[/math]라 가정하자. 그럼, [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,x\leq s }[/math]이고, 곧 [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,-x\geq-s }[/math]이다. 즉, [math]\displaystyle{ -s }[/math]는 하계이다. 이제 [math]\displaystyle{ \inf\left(-X\right)=-t\gt -s }[/math]라 가정하자. 그럼, [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,-x\geq-t }[/math]이고, 곧 [math]\displaystyle{ \forall x\in X,\,x\leq t }[/math]이다. 즉, [math]\displaystyle{ \inf\left(-X\right)=-s=-\sup X }[/math].
