Libre Wiki(Korean:리브레 위키) is a Korean Wiki website, which you watch here.

Introduction[편집 | 원본 편집]

Libre Wiki was initially made from a forked website of Rigveda Wiki(Korean: 리그베다 위키), but it became an independent website since April 16, 2015. However, its characteristics have become more similar to Korean Wikipedia than Rigveda wiki due to similarity in Wiki language.

Initially it intended to use the forked data of Rigveda wiki,[1] but it started with "empty data", without using any data because of the propriety problems and the confliction with Bronze(Korean:청동, The dictator manager of Rigveda wiki).

Which its name comes from[편집 | 원본 편집]

The name of "Libre Wiki" was determined by the vote of early users. The name of "Libre", which comes from the name of LibreOffice, means "Liberty". The wod "Libre" is pronounced variously in English, but its Korean transcription was determined as '리브레 위키', following from the Korean transcription of LibreOffice, '리브레오피스'.

Some users claimed it is a problem that its spelling is similar to ilbe(일베)[2]. In fact, when r is removed from the word "libre"(libe), it becomes an anagram of ilbe. Can't we use "v" instead of "b"? It is not vaild because "v"and "b" pronounce differently...

It shares some similarities with Spanish websites Enciclopedia Libre Universal en Español, seperated from Spainish Wikipeda, as both are made against commercialization of their original websites.

History[편집 | 원본 편집]

[3]

Since it opened on April 16, 2015, Libre Wiki stored its archives. Actually the website itself existed before it got the name of "Libre Wiki", but it became a distinct Wiki site on April 16, 2015. The name "Libre Wiki" was decided on the next day, April 17, 2015.

After that, it developed its characteristics and identities from April 19 as it perfomed a conference of electing managers, opened the exhibition of its mascorts and slogans on May, adapted the bulletin board system, and held the election of managers.

Libre Wiki have undergone many problems of its unstable servers, conflicts between users and externel problems.

Libre Wiki started discussing to make the cooperative from July 4, 2015, and finally made the cooperative on January 22, 2016.

Characteristics[편집 | 원본 편집]

As it was born as an alternative Wiki sites of Rigveda wiki, its article style is similar to Rigveda Wiki, rather than that of Korean Wikipedia, Korean Uncyclopedia, or Gooswiki, which uses the same Mediawiki engine. Actually, most users joined the Wiki from Rigveda Wiki, due to the Crisis of Rigveda Wiki by Properity Privatization. This enhanced its article styles similar to that of Rigveda Wiki.

For example, Libre Wiki does not force references to verify that their articles contain correct contents, unlike Wikipedia. Moreover, its interface shares more characteritics with Rigveda Wiki than with Wikipedia. Also, striking line is often used to express humors and ad-libs,[4] Footnotes are frequently used to add some information and humors as well as to denote the references of sentences.

As it was born due to the Crisis of Rigveda Wiki by Property Privitization[5], it considers the issues related to Creative Commons Licences or Provisions for members. Although many other wiki sites considers them carefully, Libre Wiki is especeially causes to dealing with them due to the Crisis.

However, Libre Wiki uses the same MediaWiki engine as that of Wikipedia. Thus, Wikipedia users adaped more easily than Rigveda Wiki users and began to edit Libre Wiki. Some racial Wikipedia users have tried to make articles sharing the characteritics of Korean Wikipedia. This causes the issue of assimiliation to Wikipedia. In fact, many IDs and nicknames of Korean Wikipedia from Wikipedia Communities are shown in Libre Wiki.

Initially, the purpose of Libre Wiki was making the Wiki sites 'for users', not for managers, as well as replacing Rigveda Wiki. However, many users from Korean Wikipedia, Korean Uncyclopedia and GoosWiki have joined Libre Wiki because it shares the MediaWiki engines with those wikis. This causes melting pot mixing of article styles from Rigveda Wiki and Korean Wikipedia. Since Libre Wiki is open to every user, its editing style is based on the that of Rigveda Wiki, adapting the strong points of other Wikis like Korean Wikipedia.. Actually Libre Wiki admits that its root is Enha Wiki, the predecessor of Rigveda Wiki.

At the very early days, Libre Wiki grew up abruptly and made its 5000th article in their first month. Its growing speed was about the same as that of heyday(prime age) of Rigveda Wiki.[6] Actually, Rigveda Wiki initially grew up under the situation that many users were not familiar with the concept "of free editing but pursuing of fairness", but Libre Wiki grew up with the ground of Rigveda Wiki. So the growth is actually weaker than that of Rigveda Wiki. However, Libre Wiki itself grew with remarkable speed. That was because many heavy users worked on Libre Wiki. So the number of users was fewer than that of Rigveda Wiki but individual users contributed more.

However, as the time has flown, many users left Libre Wiki due to small size comparing to NamuWiki and the growth of numbers of documents became slower. As of Feburary 2016, the total number of documents just became above 20,000, and about 30 documents were made per day. This makes users sense the crisis of Libre Wiki.

As they struggle with making the identity of uniqueness of Libre Wiki, users ponder and discuss about the Wiki continuously. As a result, Series of easy learning(Korean: 쉽게 알 수 있다 시리즈)[7] and The Gallary of centuries(Korean: 세기의 갤러리)[8] were made.

Comparison to Other Korean Wiki sites[편집 | 원본 편집]

  • NamuWiki: Like Libre Wiki, it was born as an alternative wiki sites of Rigveda Wiki. However, NamuWiki uses different engine; "the Seed", the proper engine largely based on Moniwiki. This means the differences of grammers between Libre Wiki and NamuWiki. For example, the tags of expressing striking lines ~~ ~~ or -- -- on NamuWiki is not vaild on Libre Wiki. Also, NamuWiki is based on the data crawling from Rigveda Wiki, so NamuWiki contains much more articles than Libre Wiki. Also, the Licences of wikis are not the same. Libre Wiki uses CC-BY-SA 3.0 while NamuWiki uses CC-BY-NC-SA 2.0 Korea. This makes users not allow to crawl the data from one to the other[9] without the permit of authors.
  • Korean Wikipedia: Both Libre Wiki and Wikipedia use MediaWiki engine and pursue sharing information. Moreover, they share CCL, CC-BY-SA 3.0. However, since Wikipedia pursues the "online encyclopedia", it does not allow any ad-libs or jokes unlike Libre Wiki. The rules and the editing instructions are detailed and complicated, and the discussion looks like a discussion of making encyclopedia. On the other hand, Libre Wiki can add ad-libs or subjective ideas most people share and the instructions are rather loose.
  • Korean Uncyclopedia: Both Wikis share the MediaWiki engine and allow writing humors on the article. However, Uncyclopedia pursues rather fakehumors and satires rather than factual information, while Libre Wiki pursues carrying factual information. In addition, Libre Wiki and Uncyclopedia use diffrent CCL, (Uncyclopedia uses NC licences) so the crawling of data without the permit of authors are not allowed.
  • GoosWiki: Libre Wiki and Gooswiki shares the liberal writing styles, and share MediaWiki engine as their base wiki engines. However, GoosWiki allows the vulgar expressions related to provinces, towns or died people unless they are illigal. On the other hand, Libre Wiki avoids using vulgar expressions causing conflicts like its ancestral Wiki(Rigveda Wiki). Also, the CCL is not mutual since GoosWiki selects NC Licenses. In addition, GoosWiki adapts throught MPOV(Multiple Point of View), which prohibits deleting the information owing to its incredibility. On the other hand, Libre Wiki allows deleting contents if they indicate wrong information.
  • OriWiki: One of alternative wikis of Rigveda Wiki. Although Oriwiki uses the same MediaWiki engine with Libre Wiki, it uses the Ori Mark to use some grammers from Moniwiki. Also, Oriwiki is based on the data of Rigveda Wiki, similar to NamuWiki. The CCL shares with that of Rigveda Wiki, CC-BY-NC-SA 2.0 KR, which is different from that of Libre Wiki, CC-BY-SA 3.0.
  • DCinside Wiki: Both Libre Wiki and DCinside Wiki(Abbriviated as DC Wiki) shares MediaWiki engines and they allow libreral writing styles. However, DC Wiki are more generous to using harsh expression except cruel expressions causing conflict. DC Wiki pursues humors rather than informative aspects, which are different from Libre Wiki. Also, the Licences of both wikis are not mutual, because DC Wiki adapts CCL CC-BY-SA-4.0 with database properiated.
  • RigVeda Wiki: Rigveda Wiki are nearly bankrupt now... Since Libre Wiki seperates from Rigveda Wiki, they share similar writing style and purpose of documents. However, Libre Wiki adapts different CCLs, CC-BY-SA 3.0, from that of Rigveda Wiki, CC-BY-NC-SA 2.0Really? Doesn't its manager try to pursue profits?

Comparing the overall atmosphere, the writing style Libre Wiki is similar to NamuWiki, OriWiki and Rigveda Wiki, but it pursues a little bit more informative and uses less humorous expressions than the latters. Also, the writing style is mixed, but the layouts of articles have become closer to that of Wikipedias due to the pursuit of better readability, usage of Wikipedia-style templates. In addition, fairly a lot of articles are based on Wikipedia articles because Libre Wiki allows users to crawl the articles of Wikipedias. Although Libre Wiki has no clear rules writing controversal people, Libre Wiki avoids writing biased viewpoints about them.

However, Libre Wiki allows more freedom than NamuWiki or Rigveda Wiki in other aspects. Libre Wiki has much less literal regulations on editing than that of NamuWiki(succeeding most rules of Rigveda Wiki) or Rigveda Wiki. Rigveda Wiki manager prohibits serveral articles[10] due to the legal issues or lawsuit problems. However, Libre Wiki allows writing such articles when users observe the Korean Rules. NamuWiki also are free from prohibition of politically issued ones. However, NamuWiki tends to restrict writing articles against public emotional values. For example, the words related to hierarchy of Universities of South Korea were banned. Also NamuWiki tries to unify the viewpoint of almost all articles by discussion when conflicting viewpoints are written. On the other hand, although Libre Wiki has not many articles, it allows to write conflicting viewpoints if both of them are reasonable to support the ideas. Also, LibreWiki has less barriers when it comes to notability or overall template of articles than NamuWiki.

The viewpoints of other Wikis about Libre Wiki cannot be noticeable clearly until now. That's because Libre Wiki has a little notability, a few users, a few articles, a short history, and a "bland and rather unclear" characteristics. So other Wikis have little interest in Libre Wiki and there are too few datas to distinguish the characteristics of Libre Wiki. Until now, other wikis or communities think Libre Wiki are not criticized much. Of course, this "rather bland and positive images" may not continue forever as Libre Wiki develops.

Problems[편집 | 원본 편집]

There are three major problems of Libre Wiki; the size, the unstable server, and the unnoticeable characteristics. Unlike NamuWiki, which attracts newcomers of wikis as well as most of all users of Rigveda Wiki, Libre Wiki failed to attract many people due to different Wiki engines. While NamuWiki has trouble with conflicts of a lot of heterogenous users, Libre Wiki has trouble of inactivity due to small size. Few people cause problems, but TOO MANY people also cause problems...

In addition, the server of Libre Wiki does not often function properly. The connection is unstable due to the relatively small server and heaviness of MediaWiki Engines. Due to the problems, developers plan to change the wiki engin to Liberty Engine. The article Libre Wiki/What time does Libre Wiki shut down?(리브레 위키/오늘의 리브레 위키는 몇 시에 터졌나) was made to write the time when the server has not worked. To attract users, the server problems should be solved.

Finally Libre Wiki struggles to make its identities. Firstly, it is based on Rigveda Wiki style, but the larger NamuWiki holds the images. In addition, some articles become similar to those of Wikipedia because crawled articles are not modified due to lack of editors. Due to abrupt growth on early days and serious loss of users later, many articles kept unchanged, making Libre Wiki unclear images.
