맥킨지사는 IMF사태 발발후 한국의 구조조정 과정에 가장 깊숙이 관여한 컨설팅그룹이다. 국제금융계에서는 "IMF와 맥킨지는 바늘과 실 사이"라고 말한다. 외환.금융위기를 겪으면서 IMF구제금융을 받은 50여개 나라에서 거의 빠짐없이 맥킨지가 국가시스템 및 금융.기업 구조조정 작업을 맡아 주도적 역할을 해왔기 때문이다. IMF사태 발발직후 맥킨지는 우리 정부의 공식 구조조정 컨설팅을 맡았다. 컨설팅 용역비는 IBRD(세계은행) 지원금에서 지불된 것으로 알려지고 있다. 맥킨지는 DJ정부 초기의 구조조정 과정에 지대한 영향력을 행사했다. 한 예로 정부가 98년 6월말에 단행된 5개 퇴출은행의 살생부를 만드는 데에도 맥킨지 컨설팅 자료가 결정적 작용을 했다. 맥킨지는 이같은 정부 컨설팅외에 민간 금융.기업의 개별 컨설팅도 맡아 민간 구조조정에 깊숙이 관여했다. 주택은행(현재의 국민은행), 두산그룹, 삼성생명 등 구조조정에 참여했다. IMF사태 전에는 LG그룹, 연세대학교 등의 컨설팅도 맡았다. (2002신문기사)
